Funding provided to finish project
With many thanks to our faithful supporters, we have been able today to send £4,230 to Bughungu Primary School to enable them to provide a safe source of drinking water to the school, which will finish the good work already begun. Magor Baptist Church granted us £2,500 for this project, and individuals from around the UK made up the difference.

Helping to prevent illness or death through Typhoid

Children at Bughungu Primary school in the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda are at risk from Typhoid because of the lack of safe drinking water. Currently they “get water where they can”. Fifteen pupils at Bughungu caught Typhoid in an outbreak last December. Thankfully none died, but several missed their national end-of-year exams and consequently are having to repeat the year.
Having reduced overcrowding by funding the building of three additional classrooms and an office, we were made aware of the need for safe drinking water. To meet this need we are aiming to fund the completion of a system to pipe water from a spring.
The scheme, developed by the school, makes use of its mountainous location – piping water by gravity from a reliable spring, 1¾ miles away and 925 feet higher up the mountain. Designed by experienced engineers, the system includes a purification stage informed by test results for the spring water, using ultra-violet disinfection.
Construction work has already started. Much of it, especially trenching, is being done by local volunteers and landowners. The local chiefs and community are very much in favour of the scheme. There is much still to do although, once the remaining funding is provided, within about 4 weeks the system should be up and running.
(The system uses four tanks altogether.)
The detailed budget shows the total cost of the scheme to be about £10,000. A Canadian charity, the Omughisa Rwenzori Community Development Society, has raised much of that total, but has found further funding harder to obtain. Natalya’s Fund is therefore aiming to contribute to this project by raising the remaining funds, amounting to about £4,000.
